Pocket Pillow, Book Pillow or Reading Cushion Sewing Pattern

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

A quick and easy sewing project for beginners and experienced sewists alike.

If you're new to sewing or just looking for something quick, easy and enjoyable to sew then this project is for you!

Book pillows, also called reading cushions or pocket pillows (among other names), are great for kids (and adults) who love to snuggle up and read. Simply place a favourite book or books in the pocket on the front, then use the carry handle to take it anywhere you want to go. Because they're so portable, book pillows are great for kids to use when visiting family or friends, for sleepovers and for travelling too!

The pocket is quite roomy, so there's plenty of space for a book or two. If you prefer it could also be used to hold a favourite toy, or perhaps crayons, pencils and a colouring book, or other small, quite-time activity.

This book pillow also features an envelope style closure, so there's no zip to sew! In addition, the opening allows for easy removal of the insert for washing.

This is a very easy sewing project, suitable for any skill level. If you know how to use a sewing machine and have basic sewing skills this pattern will be right for you. Each book pillow should take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

The materials required are fabric, interfacing and a store bought cushion insert.

The finished dimensions of this book pillow are 32cm (12 ¾ inches) square, and the handle is 21cm (8 ¼ inches) long.
