What are Stock Photos?

Stock photos are photos that have been taken specifically for creative or business purposes and are commercially available for others to use. They're typically of common objects, people, places or events and are perfect for using on websites, blogs, social media and other forms of marketing and advertising.

They are a great resource for micro and small business owners because they give you immediate access to high quality images at a much lesser cost than hiring a professional photographer. They often come with a licence or terms of use that stipulates how they can and can’t be used.

There are many reasons why you might want to use stock photos. Some of them are:

  • To save time

  • To save money

  • To add variety to your current social media posts

  • To have better quality photos than you can take yourself

  • You don’t have access to the thing you need a photo of

  • Or simply because they are convenient

In my blog post Six Reasons To Use Stock Photos I talk about these reasons in more detail and in an additional post, 36 Ways to Use Styled Stock Photos to Enhance Your Brand, there's loads of ideas on how to use them.

The growing library of Vicki Elle stock photos have been created with handmade and creative businesses in mind but can be used by anyone. They're available as instant downloads, so you can start using them almost straight away. Generous licensing conditions are included allowing you to crop, overlay with your own text or product and use as many times as you like. So, depending on how you choose to use them, you can often get a lot of mileage out of the one photo.

In short, stock photos are a great resource for handmade and creative businesses because they are a quick, easy and inexpensive way for you to have gorgeous photos instantly.
