How to Overlay Text on a JPG File in Canva

Updated: Sep 17, 2021

This tutorial will show you how add text directly to a JPG file using Canva. For the example I'm using a mockup, but you could use any file you like. I'll show you some other example at the end of the tutorial.

Let's get started!

Step 1.

Open Canva and select Create a Design, then Custom Dimensions.

Step 2

Enter desired dimensions. I suggest a size of 3000 x 2400 px as it is a good size for Etsy listing photos. Then click Create Design.

Step 3.

You will now have a blank workspace in front of you, ready to upload your mockup template. Click on "Uploads" on the far left of the screen.

Step 4.

Click on "Upload an Image".

Step 5.

Double click on the .jpg version of the mock up file.

Step 6.

Your image should now appear in the side panel. Click and drag your image onto the blank workspace.

It should automatically resize to fill the area.

Step 7.

Click on the Text tool on the far left of the screen.

Step 8.

Click and drag any of the heading, subheading, body text or pre-made text blocks onto your mock up.

Step 9.

Use the "handles" to resize to fit.

Step 10.

Click on "ungroup" if you want to be able to move individual sections of a premade text block.

Step 11.

Customise your text by highlighting what you want to change, then using the tools on the toolbar at the top of the screen. Follow Step 7 to resize if necessary.

Step 12.

Save your completed image and download as normal.

Congratulations, you did it!

You can use this method to add text to any .jpg file to customise it. An example of this would be to overlay text on a stock photo and use it as an announcement post on social media as shown below.

Or, another example, use to create Pinterest graphics.

The uses are endless really.

I hope you've found this blog post helpful and easy to follow. If you're interested in purchasing some mockups or styled stock photos, be sure to check out my store here.
